MERTON MEADOWS
Hereford, United Kingdom
The Merton Meadows Flood Alleviation Scheme is a key component of the Hereford Urban Village regeneration, delivering critical flood resilience infrastructure while enhancing local ecology and public access. The project reimagines an underused floodplain into a multifunctional landscape that attenuates surface water, restores habitat, and supports future development plots. Located at the headwaters of the Widemarsh Brook corridor, the site plays a pivotal role in managing overland flow from the A49 and wider upstream catchments.
The flood alleviation strategy includes reedbeds, swales, wetlands, and bunds to slow and store water, reduce downstream risk, and create new biodiversity corridors. Designed by MOOWD in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team the scheme integrates landscape infrastructure, ecological uplift, and public realm improvement. It also establishes the foundation for naturalised edges to future residential plots and enhances connectivity through the introduction of new green links. The approach demonstrates how engineered flood infrastructure can serve as high-value public space and ecological catalyst in climate-resilient urban regeneration.
