TURKU MUSEUM
Turku, Finland
The Turku Museum of History and the Future is a landmark civic and cultural destination situated at the meeting point of the Aura River and the Baltic archipelago. Designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, with landscape design led by Project Director Michael Cowdy, and environmental engineering by Atelier Ten, the project unites Turku’s maritime and industrial heritage with a forward-looking vision for its sustainable future.
Rooted in the city’s identity as a gateway between land and sea, the design integrates architecture and landscape into a seamless and adaptive public realm. The landscape plays a defining role in shaping the museum’s spatial, ecological, and civic character—featuring seasonal gardens, resilient terraces, and inclusive connections that invite community life, cultural expression, and everyday interaction.
The museum’s architecture and landscape work in harmony, preserving views to Turku Castle, managing flood resilience, and promoting circular, low-carbon construction. Together, they establish a vibrant civic campus for learning, creativity, and gathering—honouring Turku’s past while embracing the possibilities of its future.
