Springstead Village
Cambridge, United Kingdom
As Project Director, Michael Cowdy led the landscape and spatial strategy for the Springstead Village Design Code—a nationally recognised framework guiding the delivery of a sustainable new neighbourhood on the eastern edge of Cambridge. Co-authored with architects Pollard Thomas Edwards, the code was awarded the Landscape Institute Award for Landscape Planning Excellence and sets out a clear and ambitious vision for 1,200 homes, two schools, and a vibrant local centre adjacent to Cambridge Airport and Cherry Hinton village.
Developed under the principles of the National Model Design Code, the project translates national policy into a locally distinctive, landscape-led strategy. It places nature, movement, and community at the core of the design approach—prioritising walkability, biodiversity, inclusive play, and long-term climate resilience. Sustainable drainage systems, integrated habitats, and passive design measures form the foundational infrastructure of the neighbourhood rather than being treated as optional layers.
Unanimously approved and now guiding the delivery of the first 350 homes and public spaces, the code has been widely praised for its clarity, usability, and impact. It stands as a national exemplar in how thoughtful design coding can shape sustainable, socially connected, and adaptable places.
